Transportation to the UC Berkeley Campus and SSL
Meeting participants will be responsible for their own transportation to and from the UC-Berkeley (UCB) campus, and from there to SSL. For most workshop attendees, public transport is probably the best option.
This page describes how to use public transport to get to:
1. the Downtown Berkeley subway stop from either San Francisco International (SFO) or Oakland (OAK) airports;
2. the UCB campus, and the Faculty Club in particular; and
3. to from there to SSL.
1. Getting from SFO or OAK to UCB.
* The Bay Area Rapid Transport (BART) subway system is an efficient means of getting to Berkeley from SFO or OAK. Your goal is to reach the Downtown Berkeley station. (See BART notes, below, for notes on how to use BART.) BART hours are c. 5:30 am to 12:00 midnight; if you arrive outside of these hours, you will have to take either a cab (c. $75), or a BayPorter. (For precise directions to give a cab/shuttle driver, see "directions for cab/shuttle drivers" below.)
* From SFO: BART has a station at SFO, though this station might be across the airport from your terminal. While there is an internal shuttle train to the BART station, it's better to walk there. (Getting to the shuttle train can require descending to the basement, crossing into the parking garage, then taking an elevator plus one or two escalators. It can be quite a hassle.) The dotted lines on BART's SFO map show the walking routes, and also give details about the internal shuttle train. As of 04 Sept. 2007, a BART ticket from SFO to Berkeley costs $5.65.
From SFO, you'll have to transfer from a "Dublin-Pleasanton" (blue line) train, to a train bound for "Richmond" (orange line) to reach Downtown Berkeley. (Pittsburg-Bay Point [yellow line] trains can be used to transfer from the blue line to the orange line, too.) The Balboa Park station is the usual transfer point, but transfer can also be done at other stops near downtown San Francisco -- e.g., the Powell St. or Embarcadero Stops. These downtown stations have the advantage of free wireless Internet access while you wait for your next train.
* From OAK, you must take the Air-BART shuttle bus from the airport to the "Coliseum/Oakland Airport" BART subway station. Air-BART costs $3, and BART from the Coliseum/Oakland Airport stop to Downtown Berkeley is about $2.10. Be sure to board a train bound for "Richmond" (orange line), and not other destinations --- other trains head into the San Francisco, or south. (Berkeley is northward.)
2. Getting from the Downtown Berkeley BART stop to the Faculty Club.
To get to the Faculty Club from the Downtown Berkeley BART station, you can either walk, take a campus shuttle, or take a cab. On UC's .pdf map of the Berkeley campus, the Downtown Berkeley BART station is at grid coordinate C-8, and the Faculty Club is at C-3. NB: North is to the LEFT on this map!
* The walk is about 7 blocks, and is steadily uphill, gaining perhaps 20 meters over in altitude over the walk.
* Monday through Friday, UC operates daytime shuttles between about 7:30 am and 7:00 pm that can get you from the Downtown Berkeley BART station to within two or three blocks (a short downhill walk) of the Faculty Club. Seven days a week, UC operates night-time shuttles (c. 7:45 pm to 2:45 am) with either regular-route or door-to-door service that can get you either near or directly to the Faculty club. Bus schedules/routes for the Fall 2007 semester have not yet been published, but will be linked here when they become available. Fares are $1.
* Cabs are usually waiting near the Downtown Berkeley BART station. Directions for cab/shuttle drivers: Tell the driver you want to get to the Faculty Club, via the Haas School of Business (a well known location on campus), downhill from the southern intersection of Piedmont Ave. and South Dr. Note that South Dr. intersects Piedmont Ave. in two places, but cannot be entered at the northern intersection, which is one-way, against this direction of travel. It will help if you print out the map above. The driver could take either Durant Ave. or Hearst Ave. to get to the Haas School of Business from Shattuck Ave.
3. Getting to SSL.
* From the Faculty Club, it is a short walk to the Mining Circle, where an "H" bus can bring you to SSL. The UC shuttle bus schedules are on-line. Bus fares are $1.
* If for some reason you need to travel directly from somewhere else in Berkeley to SSL, a cab will be your quickest mode of travel. If the driver is unfamiliar with SSL, tell him/her to go up Centennial Drive and take the last right before Grizzly Peak Blvd.
* If you drive, note that parking at SSL is complicated! See SSL's insructions for visitors. Get parking permits in the Addition Conference Room from a meeting participant from SSL.
BART notes: For those unfamiliar with how riders access BART, here are the essential points:
1. A BART ticket is required for each rider on a BART train.
2. Tickets are purchased from automated vending machines, and record the amount of money used to purchase the ticket. This amount is determined by the rider.
3. The machines accept nickels, dimes, quarters, $1, $5, $10, and $20 bills, but will not dispense more than $4.95 in change for any one transaction. Charge-A-Ticket (CAT) machines accept credit and debit cards.
4. After buying a ticket from a vending machines, riders insert their tickets into an automated gate that records the starting station on the ticket.
5. Riders are then granted access to the BART platform, and can board an appropriate train.
6. At the end of a journey, a rider must insert his/her ticket into another automated gate that deducts the cost of the journey from the ticket before being allowed to exit the BART platform.
7. Longer journeys cost more; one or two stations cost about $2.50, but Downtown Berkeley-SFO, for example, costs more than $5.
8. If the ticket has insufficient value for the cost of the journey, the rider must use an "add value" vending machine to add money to the ticket before being allowed to exit the BART platform via the automated gate.
9. BART hours are limited (around 5:00 a.m. till a little after midnight), so make sure BART is running when you will need to use it!
